KUALA LUMPUR: In a bid to increase the number of specialist doctors, the Government is increasing the number of scholarships for the local masters programme from 450 to 1000 slots.

The 1000 scholarships will be available to doctors who plan to specialise their choice begining this year, said Health Minister Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam.

He said there were currently 3714 specialists in the government sector and an estimated 8000 specialists in the private sector.

The number, he said, only filled up about 70% of current posts available in government and private hospitals.

''We also encourage our medical officers to pursue the specialist programme via various pathways such as the membership programmes, '' said Dr S Subramaniam before the opening the 10th Health Ministry-Academy of Medicine Malaysia Meeting yesterday.

He urged medical practitioners to always strive for excellence and not be satisfied with being 'run of the mill' doctors.

"Achieving adequate supply of trained human resource with the capacity and capability to meet the needs of the nation will always be a challenge.''

''Despite changes and improvements in medical student education and post-graduate training over the past years, the Health Ministry is still facing a shortage of doctors and specialists," he said in his speech, adding that the Government was looking to increase the number of specialists in areas including radiology, pathology and emergency medicine.

During the event, Dr Subramaniam was admitted as an Honorary Fellow to the Academy of Medicine Malaysia.

Lesson Learnt During Attachment

I just finished my elective attachment in HSAH, Sg Petani yesterday.   I was having an elective attachment from 9/9 till 29/9/2013 for 2 department which were medical 1st then into the emergency & trauma.   A beautiful period of time. Honestly i was a bit blur on the first day in a medical ward.  I came with a friend but she was in another ward and doctor was separating us -_-.   What should i do? What must i do? How should i start?   And many thought came to my mind.   However, i managed to cope it. Thank to doctors who helped me during this phase and by giving tasks, med assistants, nurses and patients who gave cooperation.   It was fun! :D

Btw, there r many lesson that i learnt during my attachment. So i want to jot down some of them for future reference.

1st lesson:  Not all people are like us. They came from different background, culture and believe. The way they talk (harsh, sweet, calm, good, annoying, @_@ etc) , seeing and treat others are also not the same. Don't expect them to be us.

2nd lesson:  Not all people are lucky as us. They may have lost their love one or even lost some part of their body/malfunction. Some of them also having finance & family problem. Appreciate what we have and grateful for what we r.

3rd lesson: What u strive now is what u r in future.  strive! strive! for the future!

4th lesson:  Study smart and please be consistent. Meaningful advice. Study well dear. Much things to learns and more knowledge to gain.

5th lesson: Be good to people then they'll be good to u. It almost same to a saying of 'what u give is what u get'. Be kind to mankind. Use a proper way and manner to people. (seems like i am a med student with innocent face.. lol)

6th lesson: Don't be shame for what u really don't know. Ask! Silent syndrome does not help. Be proactive.

7th lesson: Opportunity doesn't always come, sometime u need to search it. It's not like waiting a sack of gold falling down from the sky. Of course it doesn't happen... lol.

8th lesson: Do work quick and don't waste your time.

i see 1malaysia there... ^_^.
